A good fast is not only about avoiding food and drink — it is about energy, intention and worship. If you often feel drained by midday, the fix usually lies in a few simple habits around suhoor, hydration, sleep and mindset. Here is how to make your fast better and stay energetic.
1. Do not skip suhoor
Eating a light, slow-release meal before Fajr is a prophetic habit. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Eat suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). Choose oats, eggs, yoghurt, wholegrain bread, dates and fruit rather than sugary or salty food, and drink water steadily.
2. Hydrate smartly, not all at once
Spread your water between iftar and suhoor — a glass every 30 to 45 minutes — instead of drinking a large amount at once. Cut back on strong coffee and fizzy drinks, which are diuretics, and go easy on salt at iftar.
3. Break your fast gently
Begin with dates and water, pray Maghrib, then eat a balanced meal. The Sunnah encourages hastening the iftar: "The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1957). Overeating at iftar is the biggest cause of the afternoon slump.
4. Protect your sleep and add a nap
A short nap (qaylulah) after Dhuhr restores focus for the rest of the day. Try to sleep soon after Taraweeh so you can wake refreshed for suhoor and Fajr.
5. Keep moving — lightly
Moderate activity, such as a walk after iftar, helps circulation and digestion. Save intense workouts for after breaking the fast rather than the hottest part of the day.
6. Feed your soul, and the day gets lighter
Energy is not only physical. Read Qur'an, make dhikr and use a digital tasbih; the supplication of the fasting person is not rejected (at-Tirmidhi). A fast filled with worship feels far lighter than an empty one.
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you, that you may become righteous." — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183
