The last ten nights of Ramadan hold the greatest night of the year. Allah says the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) is "better than a thousand months" (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3). Here is how to seek it faithfully.
What is Laylat al-Qadr?
It is a single night in the last ten nights of Ramadan in which the Qur'an began to be revealed and the decree of the coming year is set. Worship on it is better than worship for more than eighty years.
When is it?
The Prophet ﷺ instructed us to seek it in the last ten nights, especially the odd nights. No one knows exactly which night it is, so we strive on every night of the ten.
What should I do?
- Pray night prayer (Qiyam / Taraweeh) and lengthen your sujud.
- Read Qur'an and reflect on its meaning.
- Give charity — generously.
- Make abundant dua, especially for forgiveness for yourself and the Ummah.
The dua to say
Aisha (RA) asked what to say if she found the night, and the Prophet ﷺ taught: "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni" — O Allah, You are Most Forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me. (at-Tirmidhi)
